In Jamaica, the unemployment rate among youths aged 14-24 is 20.2% which is higher than the overall national unemployment rate of 8.9%. Youth between the ages of 16-24 account for nearly 50% of all major crimes. 40% of youths aged 13-15 reported being involved in physical fights and 14% of this group reported carrying a gun or knife in the past year. Education has been identified as a key factor in addressing the issues surrounding unemployment and criminal behavior for minors living in poverty, as it provides young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in life and make positive contributions to society.
